Learning how to read Jazz…

Jazz is not just music, it´s so much more… You see Jazz before the first tune has been played. It´s in the faces of the musicians, in the faces of the audience too. The snapping of over-aged fingers signal the start of an unbelievable evening… There… The trumpet, bao the drums, cheng – the clarinet, dinf, ding the piano-player joins in… The whole location is Jazz in that moment…

Being usually not a huge fan of partying with the elderly I had anyway a great time in Storyville yesterday. Doc Houlinds International New Orleans Jazz-Band was playing – and these guys rocked – or do you say jazzed in that context? Anyway, it´s been great music! As I described earlier, Jazz starts in the faces… I sat back and was just watching, was reading the audience… The band is playing, delivering the soundtrack of life. There you could see it all, the fun, the laughter, the pain, the tears. Watching people dancing tells a lot about them – it´s not so much the style, it´s the way they do it. You see a couple, both way over 60 enjoying life like there´s no tomorrow, dancing just because it´s nice to have each other. Then you see the ones, who are a bit too anxious – divorced maybe already the second time and now hunting again – no dance is innocent, never really relaxed, cause always the whole package of hope and disappointment dances with… You see the bored businessman who actually liked rock his whole life, but he´s expected to provide something cultural… Not realizing, that Jazz is rock just in another kick-ass way… Rock being born in anger and slowly discovering all other facets of life – Jazz born to mirror the endless struggle of comedy and tragedy… All you read in the faces you´ll hear in the music and the other way around… Doc Houlinds band made it happen, they let you feel what Jazz is about. You watch the players and you believe it – they had it all – the fun, the laughter, the pain, the tears…
